- INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON RECENT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENTS IN MATERIAL SCIENCE (RRDMS-2019) 15TH NOVEMBER 2019 ORGANIZED BY DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
The Seminar was inaugurated by Dr. Alexey V Lukoyanov, Senior Research Scientist, M N Miheev Institute of Metal Physics of Ural Branch of Russsian Academy of Sciences,Yekaterinburg, Russia, followed by a talk by him. Dr. Vasundhara Mutta, Senior Scientist, Material Science and Technology Division, CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, Pappanamcode, Thiruvananthapuram, was the other expert speaker for the seminar.

- With the outbreak of Corona virus disease (CIVD-19) Department of Chemistry took initiative to make Hand Sanitiser so as to take preventive measures to the spread of the virus. These were provided to the students who came for writing the University exam and also to the staff members of the college.

- In addition as an extension activity Chemistry department in association with Agents of Hope Non-Government Association (NGO) preparation and distribution of hand sanitizer in the time of the outbreak of Covid virus. 500 bottles of sanitizer of 100 ml each were prepared and handed over for free distribution to agents of Hope Non-Government Association.

These were distributed to the local community by their volunteers free of cost.
Departmental Activities 2018-2019
- ‘CHEMISTRY ASSOCIATION’ was formally inaugurated by Dr.George Lukose Professor, Department of Chemistry, Mar Ivanious College on 23-10-2018.The inauguration was followed by a lecture on “Frontiers in Satellite Technology”.

- The Departmental Magazine “CHEMI-OUTLOOK” was released on 23-10-2018.

- First year students of chemistry department witnessed the rocket launch held at ISRO on January30 2019.
- Students of department of chemistry attended a talk by Ade E. Yonath, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2009,on 4th February 2019 which was organised by the Kerala State Higher Education Council.
- The students of Chemistry department and science Club members organised a food festival to raise fund for charity on 14th March 2019.

- Students of science club participate in various programs like poster presentations, seminars and display of different science related factors. Different topics presented by the students are given in the table.

Departmental Activities 2017-2018
- Chemistry Association was inaugurated by Dr. S. Balachandran, Associated Professor in Chemistry, Mahatma Gandhi College, Thiruvananthapuram on 22-8-2017 and he delivered a talk about the history of coconut oil for the students.


- The department released the student magazine ‘CHEMIOUTLOOK’
- DCIII students went for study tour to Banglore and Goorg in October 26-29

- Aleena.S and Ancy. A of DCIII Chemistry attended an exhibition and talk conducted by ISRO, Valiamala as part of the World Space Week Celebrations on 6-10-17.
- Students of Chemistry department participated the inaugural function of T-20 cricket competition at Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium, Palayam on 6-11-17.
- Aleena.S of DC-III student, participated in the 27th intercollegiate quiz competition for Dr. N.S. Wariyar Rolling Trophy held at the Dept. Of Chemistry, University College, Thiruvananthapuram, on 20-12-2017
- Aleena.S of DC-III student, has been awarded the first prize in the Campus Literary Quiz conducted at All Saints’ College,Thiruvanathapuram on 31-1-2018 as part of Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters ’18.
- Lakshmi.M.S. and Shinzinja.H.of Ist year B.Sc. Chemistry participated KUDoCCA Chemisty Quiz Competition 2018 held at Dept. of Chemistry ,University of Kerala on 12-1-2018.
- Ancy.A. and Sreya.S. of DC III Chemistry participated and secured second place in inter-departmental quiz competition conducted by Dept. of Mathematics on 19-2-2018.
- Dept. of Chemistry and Science club conducted an exhibition “CHEMEX 2017-18” on 28-2-2018.


- As part of National Science Day celebrations, the Science Club of Dept. of chemistry conducted an inter-departmental poster making competition based on the theme “Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future” on 28-2-2018.

- Science club in in association with Department of Chemistry conducted an inter-departmental quiz competition on “General Science” on 5.3.2018

- Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment organized a week long programme in association with Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishat (KSSP) titled “Science Promotion Week” in all districts of Kerala on November 7-14, 2017, commemorating the birthday of Prof. C V Raman & Madam Marie Curie & Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The main objective of the programme is to promote science and scientific temper among students, teachers and general public. The science club members participated “Kerala Rally for Science 2017” organized by KSCSTE in Thiruvananthapuram district, the rally is starting at Asan Square and culminate Kanakakunnu Palace on 14.11.2017. ‘Science for People, People for Science” was the theme.

- Display of the cut outs collected from various sources “Fascinating Facts” was done every week by the members in the display board given.
- The club members and teachers from Department of Chemistry visited VSSC Space Museum and witnessed rocket launch on 21.2.2018. They observed the launching of the sounding rocket.
- Science club members organized awareness classes on Pollutions and Water Quality. Gayathri J S, Gayathri B Raj B and Sandra A of DC II Chemistry conducted an environmental awareness class on “Pollution and Role of Students in Pollution Free World” to the students of Govt. Upper Primary School, Chackai, Thiruvananthapuram on 26.2.2018.

- The club members participated in the Seminar Series organized by Dept. of Chemistry, Mahatma Gandhi College, Thiruvananthapuram in Association with Academy of Chemistry Teachers, in honour of Dr. M R Sudarsanakumar, Principal, Mahatma Gandhi College on the occasion of the retirement.
Departmental Activities 2016-2017
- Two day National Seminar on “Photonics, Medicine and the Environment” NSPME-2016 was held 22nd and 23rrd June 2016. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. M. R. Sudarsanakumar, Principal, Mahatma Gandhi College, Thiruvananthapuram.

- The final year Chemistry students visited VSSC space museum and witnessed Rocket Launch on 17/08/2016.
- The Chemistry Association was Inaugurated on 7/11/2016 by Dr. Selwin Josyphus, Assistant Professor Mar Ivanious College, Trivandrum. The annual departmental magazine ‘CHEMIOUTLOOK’ was released on the occasion.
- Dr. Selwin Josyphus, Assistant Professor Mar Ivanious College, Trivandrum gave a talk on ‘Neurological Drugs’ on the occasion of the Chemistry Association Inauguration on 7/11/2016.
- The students of DC III along with teachers from the Department of Chemistry visited the FACT, Ernakulam on 1st March 2017.
Science Club Activities
The Science Club under the supervision of the Department Of Chemistry currently comprises of 32 members from various departments including 8 members from the Dept of Chemistry, one member from the Dept of Zoology and 23 members from the Dept of English thus adding versatility and diversity to the club.
The academic year had been a busy one for the club. The club convened every Wednesday. During the weekly meeting, the members, under the mentorship of Dr. Beena Kumari K S, discussed trending topics in the world of science and related events. Students chose an interesting topic and did a project on the selected topic (which included charts and models).

- The science club members Malavika K G, Athira G S, Akshitha Das, Renjitha R of DC II Chemistry visited the medical exhibition held at Medical College Thiruvananthapuram, MedEx 2017 as part of their extension activity. The students gained valuable experience by attending the artistic medical expo.
- Aleena S of DC II Chemistry attended the lecture on 'Discovery Of Gravitational Waves' organised by Breakthrough Science Society as part of theprogram observing 'International Day Of Women And Girls In Science' held at Kerala State Science and Technology Museum, on 11th February as a part of science club activity.
- The science club members along with teachers from the Department of Chemistry visited the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Trivandrum on 15th February 2017. They had the amazing opportunity to observe the launching of the sounding rocket RH-200 close at hand. The visit turned out to both educational and exciting. The members also visited St Mary Magdalene church, now the Space Museum, which proved to be informative and helped to shed light on the history of the space centre.
