Activities

  • Botany Association activities for the year 2018 was inaugurated by Dr. Mathew Dan, Scientist and Head, Plant Genetic Resource Division, Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute, Palode, Thiruvananthapuram. He also delivered a lecture on “Identification and Characterization of Medicinal Plants”. 

    

  • University First Rank holder Ms. Apsara I G was felicitated during the occassion.

  • A powerpoint presentation competition was conducted for the Botany students in connection with the inauguration of Botany association. Ms. Safana R. DC III Botany bagged first prize in the competition. 
  • Manuscript magazine ‘Petrichor’ prepared by the second year B. Sc. Botany students was released by Dr. Mathew Dan, Scientist and Head, Plant Genetic Resource Division, Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute, Palode, Thiruvananthapuram.

  • Study tour was conducted for the students of Final year B.Sc. Botany students to Thanshikar’s Organic Spice Farm, Goa. Dr. Nisha K. K. and Dr. Sr. Shaina T. J. accompanied the students.

  • Field study were conducted to the Open course Horticulture students to Botanic garden, Kuzhippalam on 1st December 2018
  • Conducted two days Workshop on ‘In-situ synthesis of bio-nanoparticles’ Makeintern and E-Cell IIT, Kharagpur on 3rd and 4th January 2018

     

  • Five students, SafwanaSajidAhamed  (DC II Botany), Safana R. (DC III Botany), Priyanka M.S. (DC III Botany), Sreelekshmi B (DC III Botany) and  Priyanka T. (DC II Botany) were selected for internship at IIT Kharagpur. 

 

 

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY (2017 -2018)

  • ‘World Environment Day’ was celebrated by the department of Botany on 5th June 2017. As part of the celebration a sapling of ‘Lakshmi tharu’(Simarouba glauca) was planted by our Principal, Dr. Caroline Beena Mendez in ‘Mother Mary Frances Medicinal Garden’

  

  •  Botany Association activities for the year 2017 was inaugurated on 26th September 2017 by Dr. K. Murugan, Principal, Govt. Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram. A talk on ‘Scope of Botanical Research’ was also delivered in the same day.

  

  • Manuscript magazine ‘ Harmony of Nature’ prepared by second year students of Botany was released by Dr. K. Murugan, Principal, Govt. Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram

  • Study tour was conducted for the SV Botany core students to Mysore, Bandipur and Ooty. 

  • Department of Botany and PG Department of Environmental Sciences participated in the ‘Rally for Rivers’, a programme of ISHA foundation for saving the rivers of India.

 

  • Field study trip was conducted for the Horticulture Open course students to the Botanic garden, Kuzhippalam on 22nd November 2017
  • Nature outreach programme is regularly organized by the department for the second year BSc Botany students. The students learn about plants in their own habitat and also collect botanical specimens during these trips. This year the visit was organized to the Botanic garden, Kuzhipallam and Kovalam beach.
  • Interdepartmental Flower arrangement competition was conducted on 22nd February 2018 on three categories of arrangements- One Flower One Leaf Arrangement, Mass Arrangement and Wild Flowers Arrangement. Sr. Ajila and Sr. Diana of DCII Zoology received first prize for One Flower One Leaf Arrangement, Jennifer Joy of DCIII Zoology received first prize for Mass arrangement and Wild flower Arrangement.
  • An exhibition ‘Hortus Planta’ was conducted on 23rd February 2018 based on the theme of horticulture. The exhibition was inaugurated by our Principal, Dr. Caroline Beena Mendez. First and Second year BSc Botany students actively participated in the exhibition

Enviromental Club Activities

  • Office bearers of the Enviromental club for the year 2017-18 were elected and are the following: President- Abhirami S (Botany); Vice-president- Jeni J (Economics); Secretory- Nithya Mohan (English); Joint secretory- S. Karishma (Botany)
  • Members meet every week for an Eco discussion forum, where they present and discuss various topics on environmental issues
  • Enviromental club initiated a programme ‘Germplasm collection of Capsicum’ by which all the Capsicum varieties, both cultivated and wild, are collected and conserved in the garden

 

  • Members of the club organized a ‘Seeds Puzzle’ in connection with the exhibition ‘Hortus Planta’ conducted by the department of Botany. 
  • Members of the club are involved in the maintenance of Botanical Garden and Medicinal Garden of our college.

 

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY (2016 -2017)

  • Digital library of the department of Botany was officially inaugurated by the librarian of our college, Sr. Nirmala on 8th July 2016. The digital library has e-books, PPts and videos relating to various branches of Botany and provides an excellent teaching-learning aid

  • Know Our Plants’ campaign is being conducted by the by the final year students of the department to provide knowledge about locally available plants 
  • Botany Association activities for the year 2015-16 was inaugurated by Dr. S Lakshmi Devi, Founder & Ex-Principal, Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied Sciences for Women & Hony. Director, Centre for Entrepreneurship and Career Oriented Program, University of Delhi on 20th July, 2016. The manuscript magazine ‘Dew Drops’ prepared by DCII Botany students of the department was released by the chief guest on the occasion.

 

  • National Seminar on ‘Insight into Plant Science Research’ was organized on 20th July, 2016. First leads talk was given by Dr. S Lakshmi Devi, Founder & Ex-Principal, Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied Sciences for Women & Hony. Director, Centre for Entrepreneurship and Career Oriented Program, University of Delhi on the topic ‘Genes to transgenics’. Second lead talk was given by Dr. Raju Antony, Technical Officer, JNTBGRI on ‘Taxonomy of Ferns and Lycophytes of Western Ghats’. Kum. Apsara (II DC) welcomed the gathering and Kum. Anila S Mathew (III DC) proposed vote of thanks. 

  

  • Alumni meet was organized by the department of Botany on 23rd July 2016. Fourty eight students participated in the meet. Kum. Arya M R was felicitated on the occasion for securing III Rank in the University exam. 
  • As an alumni initiative a lending library was inaugurated on 23rd July 2016. The program was named ‘My Book For You’ and 80 books were donated by the alumni members.

  • The department of Botany documented flora of our campus and released booklets on ‘Campus Flora’, ‘Trees of All Saints’ Campus’ and ‘Medicinal Plants of All Saints’ Campus’ on 1st August 2016

  • An exhibition ‘Planta Vista’ was organized by the department of Botany on 1st August 2016. Students exhibited plants belonging to major groups like Algae, Fungi, Bryophytes & Pteridophytes. Various charts, models and handicrafts using plant materials were also exhibited

  • As part of celebration of ‘International Year of Pulses’ a pulse plant Cajanus cajan was planted in the Botanical Garden of our college by the NAAC peer team members

 

  • A Programme ‘Experientio-2017’ was conducted by the Department of Botany. Dr. Sajitha Rajan, Early Career Research Scholarship Fellow, University of Melbourne, Australia delivered a talk. A departmental quiz competition was also conducted for the students. Kum. Shalin Simon (DCIII Botany) secured first prize.
  • ‘Fern Friends’ an initiative to collect, identify, exhibit and conserve ferns in the ‘Fern Dale’ of All Saints’ College Campus was assigned for the second year Botany main students. The students collected and displayed ferns with their botanical name and family and the plants were introduced into the ‘Fern Dale’.
 
  • ‘Nature outreach programme’ was conducted for fourth semester students. Thirumullavaram and Munrothuruth were explored for the collection of plants.
  

Environmental Club Activities

Environmental club activities of the college are co-ordinated by the department of Botany. Maintenance of Medicinal Garden, Nakshathra Garden and Mahatmaji Jaivodhyanam is done by the members of the club. Every year Department of Botany conduct green audit of complete flora in the college campus. In addition, a wide variety of herbaceous and shrubby forms of plants that are of medicinal value also grow luxuriantly in the campus.  

  • Haritotsava’ was organized by the department of Botany on July 2016. Some rare and endemic tree saplings were bought from JNTBGRI and planted trees  in Mahatmaji Jaivodhyanam by the environmental club members
  • Green audit was conducted by the department of Botany on 26th July 2016. Members of the environmental club actively participated in the identification of the plants in our campus with the expert advice of Dr. Santhosh Kumar E.S., Systematic Botanist (Technical Officer), JNTBGRI, Palode. 

  • Name boards were fixed in the Garden of Eden and Medicinal Garden by the environmental club members.
