 Nature Club Activity

 Bird survey of college campus 2020 along with WWF volunteer using e - bird on 17 February 2020

  

 

 

A talk on Odonates (Dragon fly and Damsel fly) by members of Odonates society of India, pre- nature camp class for members of nature club on 18 February 2020

 

  • Nature camp at Kallar for Kuruvi Nature club members- Dr. Siny G Benjamin (Teacher in charge) along with members of Society of Odonate studies. Bird watching and Odonate watching was main highlight of the camp. The camp was organized on 25th February 2020

 Zoology Association Inauguration
 
 
                      The inauguration of the activities of the Zoology Association for the academic year 2018-19 was conducted on 10-10-2018 at 10.30a.m in the Recreation Hall. The chief guest was Dr. Lathakumari.R, a well experienced physician and consultant of Prasuthi Thantra, KP Pathrose Vaidiyan's Kandamkulathy Super Speciality Hospital, Palayam, Trivandrum. She delivered a talk on the topic ‘Health Issues seen among the Adolescents and its Management’ from 11.00 am -12.30 pm for the students of the Department.
  
 
  
Inter-departmental Essay writing Competition
 
 
 A inter-departmental essay writing competition on  the topic ‘Need for Sustainable Development in Biodiversity Hotspots of Kerala’ was organized on 22-10-18 from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm in the Zoology Department by Dr.Dhanalekshmy.T.G. The judgment was done by Ms. Sapna Srinivas, Assistant Professor of English and Ms. Surya, Guest lecturer, Department of English and the prize winners were selected. 
 
The prize winners were 
 
1st  prize : Aleesha Fathima S L (I year M.Sc Environmental Science)
 
2nd prize : Anila P (Sem V B.Sc Botany)
 
3rd prize : Sowfiya M (Sem V B.Sc Zoology)
 
 
The prize winners were issued with certificates from All Saints’ College which will be distributed to the winners on the Valedictory day function.
  
 
Other Activities
 
 
A Bridge course was conducted for the SEM 1 on 25th & 26th July, 2018.
 
Smt. Divya Grace Dilip is appointed as the internal mentor for SSP programme.
 
Dr. Siny.G.Benjamin is appointed as the internal mentor for WWS programme.
 
  
Field Study Trip
 
  
A 4-day field study trip from 11-2-19 to 14-2-19 was organized for the 44 nos of SEM -6 students. The students along with faculties Dr. D. Sherly from Department of Zoology and Dr. Divya S R from Department of Physical education and the Lab Assistant Renuka accompanied the students to the Wayanad Sanctuary, CMFRI at Kochi and the Zoological Survey of India at Kozhikode.  
 
 
Research Activities
 
Dr.Dhanalekshmy.T.G. participated and presented papers in the National Seminar on 7-9, August, 2018 and International Conference on 26-28, February, 2019. The papers were published in the proceedings of the National Seminar and Conference.
 
 Extension activities - Kuruvi Nature Club

 The activities for the Nature club started in November, 2019. 46 students were registered as members in the club. An introduction about the club activities was delivered by Dr.Dhanalekshmy.T.G. 
 
Anjana S Nair, SEM 3, Zoology Core and Sivapriya A S, SEM 3, Economics Core were selected as student representatives of the club.
 
The members attended the Friday Forum, on 7, December 2018, the open forum for students to share their views, concerns and ideas on environment related topics, a joint venture by WWF-India, Kerala State Office and Directorate of Museums and Zoos on first Friday of every month. Mr. Renjan Mathew Varghese, Director, WWF-India Kerala State Office delivered a talk on Ecological Footprint from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. The topic was much interesting and useful for the students as it was highly interactive and on relevant time specific theme.
 
Workshop
 
 A 1-day workshop on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution ‘ was  jointly organized by the Kuruvi Nature Club and WWF for the nature club members on 13-3-19 at All Saints’ College in the Conference Hall. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Renjan Mathew Varghese, Director, WWF-India- Kerala State. Dr. Dhanalekshmy T.G., H.O.D., Department of Zoology delivered the welcome speech and Dr. Caroline Beena Mendez, Principal gave the Presidential address. Ms. Anusreedha Sivanandan, Project Officer, WWF-India gave the introductory speech about the workshop and Smt. Divya Grace Dilip delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was conducted from 10.30 am to 3.30 pm with various activity and presentation sessions. 37 students participated in the workshop. The feedback from the participants was extremely good. Certificate of participation was issued by WWF for the students.

Activities of the Department of Zoology was inaugurated by Dr. S Jasmine, Principal Scientist, CMFRI, Vizhinjam on the topic Diversity of Hard Corals on October, 23, 2017
 
 

Extension activities 

The members of the Kuruvi Nature Club conducted a study to prepare a checklist of birds in All Saints’ College Campus.
Talk by Mr. Balasankar on the topic Forest, Wild life and environment on June, 6, 2017 at New Auditorium for the students of all the Departments
     
Add-on-Course

A one-day workshop on Ornamental fish and Aquarium maintenance was organised by the Department of Zoology for the students registered for the course on September, 6, 2017. Dr. Mithun Sukumaran, Assistant Professor, Dept of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries was the Resource person.

Dr. Dhanalekshmy.T.G presented a paper on Ground Water Quality Assessment of the Selected Sites in Thiruvananthapuram City at the National Seminar "Blue Economy: Fostering Sustaibable Development and Profitable Resource Utilisation" organized by PG and Research Department of Zoology, Fatima Mata National College, Kollam, Kerala. 22-23 August, 2017
Dr. Gigi.C.Rajan presented a paper on Estimation of Fecundity and gonadosomatic index of the fish Oreochromis mossambicus from the Veli lake Back water, Kerala at the National Seminar "Blue Economy: Fostering Sustaibable Development and Profitable Resource Utilisation" organized by PG and Research Department of Zoology, Fatima Mata National College, Kollam, Kerala on 22-23 August, 2017

Dr. Siny G Benjamin organized a Symposium on Ozone Layer- Earth’s Sunscreen funded by Kerala State Council for Science and Technology on 25th September 2017

Co-curricular/ Extracurricular Activities Organised
1. Intercollegiate Quiz Biologica Ozonia - a path to nature’s mind was organised  on 26th September 2017 as part of the observance of  Ozone day.
   
Dr.Siny G Benjamin attended the Special Summer School at MHRD-Academic Staff College at Kariavattom from 11th  to 31st July 2017.
 
The Department of Zoology organised a 2-day International Seminar on Climate Change and Global Sustainability on 18-19, December, 2017. The programme was sponsored by Directorate of Environment and Climate Change. Dr.Padma Mohanti, IFS, the chief guest inaugurated the seminar and gave the key note address.  
 
 
 2016-2017

 ZOOLOGY ASSOCIATION

Zoology Association activities for the academic year was inaugurated by Dr.Jiny George, Asst. Prof., School of Biology, IISER, TVPM on 30, September at 10.30 am in the Audio Visual Room. He delivered a speech on Developmental Biology- Techniques and Methods and its importance. He had an interactive discussion with the students. 

 

 

 

  • FIELD STUDY TRIP:The SEM V students were taken for a 5-day field study trip from 3 to 8, October, to Mudumalai Wild Life Sanctuary, Ootty by the Faculty of the Department of Zoology, Dr.D.Sherly and Ms. Sruthy, Guest Lecturer of the Department of History. The students also visited the water Theme Park, Veegaland at Ernakulam

P.T.A MEETING

For SEM V students was conducted on 28, July by the Class teacher Dr. Dhanalekshmy.T.G., SEM III on 2 & 4, November by Smt. Divya Grace Dilip and SEM I on 4, November by Dr.Siny.G.Benjamin

ADD-ON-COURSE

The Add-on-course on “Ornamental Fish culture and Aquarium Management” understood to be beneficial for the students was decided to be continued after discussion with the Principal, Dr.Jessy Jose and getting consent from the Management. The Faculties of the Department along with Guest lecturer Dr.Gigi.C.Rajan is taking the classes during interval hours and Saturdays.

  • EXHIBITION

'Secrets of the Sea' was jointly organized by Department of Zoology, Coastal Students Cultural Forum and Friends of Marine Life on 15, February, 2016. 

 

 

Dr. Gopakumar, Emeritus Scientist, CMFRI delivered a talk to the students and had an interactive discussion with the students about the marine life and its importance.

  CLUB MEETING

 

  • Was held on 2, November, 2016 by Dr.Dhanalekshmy.T.G. to discuss and decide about the field study work to be done by the members during the academic year. 
  • Members were registered with WWF –India-Kerala State. The badge, pamphlets and the News letter-Mruthika released by WWF was distributed to the members.
 

COMPETITION

 The club members Malavika M.R. and Swetha Rachel George participated in the Essay writing competition and Anishma and Divya attended the Quiz competition organized by the Department of Museum and History at Trivandrum Museum on 3 and 6, October.

TALK
  •  Mr. P. Madhusoodhanan, Wild Life photographer and Photo Journalist, Dimotix, London delivered a talk on Snakes: Poisonous and Non-poisonous’ held at Museum Auditorium on 7, October.
  • Dr. Dhanalekshmy.T.G. delivered a talk for the club members on 3, February on the ‘Importance of wetland conservation’ based on the PPT prepared by WWF for the Nature Club Units of various educational institutions. 
  • Dr. Santhosh.B., Principal Scientist, CMFRI, Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram delivered a talk on “Scope of Zoology” and had an interactive discussion on 15, February, 2017.
  • Dr. Dhanalekshmy.T.G. delivered a talk for the club members on 5, June, 2017 the “World Environment Day” about the aims and about this year’s theme “Go Wild for Life”.
 

FRIDAY FORUM

  • Mr. B.V.Subash Babu delivered a talk on Energy Conservation and its importance on 4 November. A talk on Wet lands on 20, January, 2017 was also attended by the members.
 

FASCINATING FACTS

 

  • Display of the cut outs collected from various sources in the caption “Fascinating Facts” was done every week by the members in the Nature Club Notice Board. 
FIELD STUDY TRIP
  •  A one-day field study was conducted to the Veli estuary in Thiruvananthapuram city on 29, December, 2016 to study about the ecosystem.
  • A one-day field study was conducted to the Zoo in Thiruvananthapuram city on 12, April, 2017 to understand more about the primate diversity.
