 ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY THE POST GRADUATE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

 
Since its inception, the primary focus of the Department has been mainly centered on teaching along with extension activities enhancing the research aptitude of the student community. The Teachers and Students of this Department have undertaken research activities in the areas of Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, Geo informatics and Remote Sensing. The Department has strong foundation and expertise in the following areas:-

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES 2018-2019
 
  • A regional seminar on the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” was organized by the Department of Environmental Sciences, supported by Bhoomithra Sena Club in connection with the Environmental Sciences Association Inauguration on 6th June 2018. The invited expert of the day was Dr. Vishnu V.S., Asst. Professor, Department of Chemistry, Govt. Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram.  

 

 

  • A Two Day National Workshop was organized in observance with the World Ozone Day observation 2018 on 18th and 19th September, 2018 The theme of the workshop was ‘Keep Cool and Carry on : The Montreal Protocol’. Mr. Renjan Mathew Varghese, State Director, WWF- India and Dr. Beena Lawrence, Asst Professor, Dept. of Botany, Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil were the Key speakers. The programme was funded by KSCSTE. The programme was conducted jointly by the Bhoomithra Sena Club and the Department of Environmental Science

 

              

 

 

  • A Power Point Presentation competition was also organized as part of the programme. The competition was evaluated by Dr. Vishnu V. S., Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Government Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram. The first, second and third positions for the competitions went to Safwana Saji Ahamed and Sruthy Krishnan, Nafla Mubarak and Aparna and Siddharth Vikam and Adith Krishna A. The cash prizes were given away by the expert and certificates by the Principal.

 

                                           

 

  

                                                   

 

  • In connection with observance of the World Ozone Day 2018, a slogan writing competition was organized  jointly by the Department and Bhoomitra Sena Club of the college on 25th of September, 2018

 

 

  • An Inter-collegiate Poster Designing Competition was held by the Bhoomitra Sena Club of the College in association with the Department of Environmental Sciences on 28th September, 2018.   • Dr. Smitha Asok V successfully Co-ordinated the Online Training course on ‘Geospatial inputs for enabling Master Plan Formulation under AMRUT sub scheme’ conducted by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun, as part of it’s Off-Campus Outreach Certificate Programme during July 23rd to July 27th , 2018.
  • Dr. Smitha Asok V successfully Co-ordinated the Online Training course on ‘Remote Sensing and Digital Image Analysis’ conducted by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun, as part of it’s Off-Campus Outreach Certificate Programme during September 4th to September 14th, 2018.
  • Dr. Smitha Asok V successfully Co-ordinated the Online Training course on ‘Hyperspectral Remote Sensing and its Appications’ conducted by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun, as part of it’s Off-Campus Outreach Certificate Programme during September 18th to September 21st , 2018.
  • Dr. Smitha Asok V. co-ordinated the Institutional Participation in Telecasting of the Live Lecture  under "Beyond Syllabi programme of the Meghnad Saha Center for Content Development (MSCCD) of Online  Resources  Initiatives of  Collegiate Education (ORICE) on 25th October, 2018 by Hon. Minister for Higher Education, Dr. K. T. Jaleel on the Topic ‘Pluralistic Culture’.

 

 

 

 

Seminars /Conferences/ Workshops/ Trainings: Attended

  • The faculty and students participated in the WED 2018 observance at Kanakakunnu on 5th June, 2018. Two students of the Department (Swathy S. B. and Raji T. R.) participated in poster designing competition. The programme was conducted by DoECC.
  • Dr.  Smitha Asok V successfully completed a Two-week Training Programme on 'Microwave Remote Sensing Applications' at National Remote Sensing Centre, Hyderabad from 16th to 27th April, 2018

 

  •  Dr. Ayona Jayadev participated in the one day intensive Training to Programme Officers of National Service Scheme on   19.06.2018 at the Senate Chamber, Kerala University Buildings, Palayam.
  • Dr.  Smitha Asok V successfully completed a One week Training Programme on ‘SAR Data Processing and Analysis for land Applications with Special Emphasis on L and S Bands' under Training and Research in Earth Eco-system at Space Applications Centre, Indian Space Research Organization, GoI at  Ahmedabad from 6th to 10th August, 2018.

 

 

 

 

 

  • Dr. Reshma. J. K.  participated in the STEM Teacher Training Workshop on Research–Based Pedagogical Tools (Level 1) held from 23.09.2018 to 26.09.2018 which was jointly sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, The British Council and Centre of Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education (CoESME), IISER (Pune), supported by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, at Kolkata, West Bengal. The workshop was conducted by a team of experts from the Sheffield Hallam University, United Kingdom.

  • Dr.  Smitha Asok V participated in the NISAR Science Workshop organized at Space Applications Centre, Indian Space Research Organization, GoI at Ahmedabad from 15th to 17th November, 2018 and also presented the status and progress of the SAC funded MRP at the Review Meeting convened along with the Workshop.

       Refresher Course

  • Dr. Smitha Asok V attended Refresher Course in Environmental Sciences at the UGC HRDC, Kariavattom, from 28th November to 18th December 2018.

            Research Activities

  • Dr. Smitha Asok V.  Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences, All Saints’ College is an approved Supervising Guide in Environmental Sciences under the University of Kerala vide U.O No. Ac.E1/A1/52897/2017 dt. 23/01/2018 and has got a student (Ms. Faseela V. S.) registered for PhD under her guidance, in the July, 2018 session.
  • Dr. Smitha Asok V as approved Research Supervisor in Environmental Sciences, participated in the Doctoral Committee meeting conducted on 1st October, 2018, in the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Kerala, Kariavattom for the July, 2018 session of PhD Registration under the University of Kerala.

Invited Lecture

  • 1.       Dr.Reshma.J.K., delivered a lecture on the topic ‘India and Climate Change’ to the students of Civil Service Foundation Course of Vlathankara Forane Education Ministry on 11.11.2018.

Judging Panel

  • Dr.Reshma.J.K., served as Judge in Climatia-2019 of  the first Climate Ambassadors Conclave on 03.02.2019 at State Central Library Auditorium. The programme was part of Project ‘Sthithi’ under ‘Change Can Change Climate Change’ (C5). Proactive solutions proposed to tackle climate change by 15 selected teams from various Schools and Colleges were evaluated and judged.   

 

 

 

 
DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES 2017-2018 
 

1. Dr. Reshma.J.K. served as Faculty in charge (FIC) of the internship for M Sc students with Matptop Technical Services Pvt. Ltd, for the project entitled "A study on the water bodies of Thiruvananthapuram city with special reference to Parvathyputhanar and its feeder canals". Internship was conducted from March 1st to April 30th 2017. 13 students were offered internship certificates during the successful completion of the programme on 6th May 2017. Dr. Reshma J K, Dr. Ayona Jayadev, Dr. Smitha Asok V and Ms. Rajani V were awarded a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of the invaluable services rendered as Faculty Co-ordinator for the Two Month Internship with Matprop Technical Services Pvt Ltd.

2. Dr. Ayona Jayadev and Dr. Smitha Asok V participated in the Two-day Training Programme on Effective Course Delivery using MOODLE from May 5 to 6, 2017 conducted by the ICT Academy of Kerala Learning Centre, Technopark, Trivandrum.

3.     Dr. Smitha Asok V. was sanctioned a Major Research Project, under L&S Airborne NASA-ISRO SAR Mission from Space Applications Centre (SAC), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for an amount of Rs. 20,22,000 for a period of three years from June 2017 onwards.

4.     Dr. Reshma J K, Dr. Ayona Jayadev, Dr. Smitha Asok V and Ms. Rajani V participated in the World Environment Day 2017 celebrations conducted by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment on 5thJune, 2017 at Science and Technology museum, Thiruvananthapuram.

5.     Participated in the International Seminar on "Frontiers in Genomics and Molecular Techniques" during March 1st-3rd 2017 organised in connection with the sesquicentennial celebrations 2016-17 at University College, TVPM.

6.     Dr. Reshma J K, Dr. Ayona Jayadev, Dr. Smitha Asok V and Ms. Rajani V participated in the Workshop on Syllabus Revision for M Sc Environmental Sciences, conducted by the University of Kerala at Department of Environmental Sciences, Kariavattom on 16.06.2017.

7.     Dr. Smitha Asok V. was appointed by Cochin University of Science and Technology as External Examiner to conduct Project Viva-voce for M Sc Geo-informatics at IIITM-K, Tvm.

8.     Dr.Reshma.J.K participated in the UGC sponsored Special Summer School ( Multidisciplinary Refresher Course) conducted by the UGC- Human Resource Development Centre, University of Kerala, Kariavattom , TVPM from 11.07.2017 to 31.07.2017.

9.      Dr.Reshma.J.K engaged a session on 'Water Management ' to the Civil Service Foundation course students at St. Francis Xavier Church, Thirupuram on 22.01.2017.

10.     Dr. Reshma.J.K., is appointed as Member of Board of Studies in Environmental Sciences (University of Kerala), and will hold charge for a period of three years from 20/07/2016 to 19/07/2019 according to Ac.D/2/9540/2016; notified by University of Kerala.

11.   Dr. Reshma.J.K., is appointed as Chairperson of Board of Examiners for the 5th, 3rd and 1st semester BSc Environmental Sciences and Environment and Water Resource Management degree Examinations 2016-17, as per letter No. EB VIII/2017 dt 09/01/2017, issued by University of Kerala.

12.  Dr. Reshma.J.K., delivered an invited lecture on 'Portfolio Development' during the "Learning to Learn" induction program conducted on 20th November 2017 at Department of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, University of Kerala.   

13. A One Day National Workshop on ‘Popularization of Remote Sensing based maps and Spatial Information’ was organized jointly by the Department and Indian Society of Remote Sensing, Trivandrum Chapter, in association with the observance of National Remote Sensing Day on 11th August, 2011. The Programme was funded jointly by Indian Space Research Organization and Indian Society of Remote Sensing.

 

 

 

14.     Dr. Smitha Asok V was awarded a Certificate as Co-ordinator as part of the Off-campus Outreach Certificate Programmefor the online training course on ‘Remote Sensing and GIS applications in Carbon Forestry’ conducted by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun, on 11thAugust, 2017.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

15.     Ms. Rajani V and Ms. Jenitha Jerome along with the students attended National Seminar on ‘Meeting Sustainability Challenges through renewable energy jointly organized by Kerala ENVIS Hub, KSCSTE and TERI ENVIS resource partner, Delhi on 5th December, 2017 at Mascot Hotel, Trivandrum.

16.     Dr. Smitha Asok V participated in the Symposium on ‘Ozone Layer - Earth’s sunscreen’ organized by Department of Zoology, All Saints’ College, Thiruvananthapuram on 25th September, 2017.

17.     Dr. Reshma. J.K., participated in the national seminar on "Advances in Functional Materials" organised by Department of Physics, sponsored by KSCSTE on 19.09.2017 and 20.09.2017 at All Saints' College, TVPM.

V., and Dr. Smitha Asok., PG Department of Environmental Sciences, All Saints' College, participated in the Curriculum Fair 2018, organised jointly by the Curriculum Development Centre, Department of Education and Internal Quality Assurance Cell of University of Kerala and FLAIR, Govt. of Kerala at Student Amenity Centre, Senate House Campus, Palayam from 16th March to 22nd March, 2018. The poster entitled "Data Management for Science Research-From Traditional Records to Skills Portfolios" secured "Best Poster Award" and grabbed  First position among the participants.

32.     Ms. Rajani V,  Dr. Ayona Jayadev and Dr. Smitha Asok V were awarded a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition for the valuable services rendered as Academic Consultant in the study of water resources, as part of Environmental Literacy Project of Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority, Thiruvananthapuram.

33.     Dr. Smitha Asok V as Co-ordinator of the Biodiversity Club, organized an International Special Lecture on ‘Theoretical and Practical Introduction to SAR Remote Sensing’ by Dr. Vishnu Nandan, Post Doctoral Researcher at the Cryosphere Climate Research Group, University of Calgary, Canada, on 18th December, 2017.

35.     Dr.Reshma.J.K., participated in the National workshop on "Popularisation of Remote Sensing Based Maps and Geospatial Information organised by Indian Space Research Organisation and Indian Society for Remote Sending on the eve of National Remote Sensing Day on August 11, 2017 at All Saints' College, TVPM.

 

36.     Dr. Smitha Asok V was appointed as Chair Person for the Board of Examiners for the fifth, third and first Semester B Sc Environmental Sciences and Environment and Water Resource Management Degree Examination, 2017-18.

37.     Organised the "Rally for rivers" 
Campaign together with Department of Botany sponsored by ISHA foundation at All Saints' College, TVPM. Whole college participated in the event on 12/10/201

38.     Dr. Smitha Asok V as Institutional Co-ordinator, successfully co-ordinated three Online Training Courses as part of the Off - Campus Outreach Certificate Programme conducted by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Indian Space Research Organization, during the academic year 2017-18.

39.     Dr. Smitha Asok V participated in the National Workshop on ‘Environmental Modelling’ organized by the Department of Environmental Sciences, at University of Kerala on 30th and 31st January, 2018.

40.     Dr. Smitha Asok V was accorded sanction as approved Research Supervisor in the subject of Environmental Sciences, under the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology, University of Kerala.

41.     Dr. Smitha Asok V attended the Training Programme on ‘Soil Moisture and Agricultural Monitoring using Microwave Remote Sensing’ jointly organized by Space Applications Centre (SAC),ISRO and IEEE GRSS at SAC, Ahmedabad during February 07-09, 2018.

42.     Dr. Smitha Asok V initiated an International Mentorship support Collaboration with Dr. Vishnu Nandan of the Cryosphere Climate Research Group, University of Calgary, Canada for the PhD Project entitled ‘Above ground volume/biomass estimation and validation using airborne S and L band  NISAR data and Radiative transfer modeling’ funded by ISRO.

43.  Dr.Reshma.J.K ., is in charge of student observorship Programme organised at  Dept of Community Medicine, Medical College from 07.05.2018 to 06.06.2018

44.  Dr.Reshma.J.K. is appointed as Chairperson for I,II,and II semester Msc Environmental Sciences examinations by University of Kerala.

DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES 2016-2017

  •  On World Environment Day, 2016, Department of Environmental Sciences organized a “Neem Green Kerala Project” for Neem Tree Propagation initiated in college campuses, on 06/06/2016. The event was inaugurated by Mr. K.P. Kannan and Prof. Devaki, Programme Co-ordiantors, Neem Green Kerala, Department of Forest and Wild Life (Social Forestry Programme), by planting neem saplings in the area allotted for ‘Santhisthal’ under Biodiversity club of the Department

  • As part of World Environmental Day Celebrations, Department organized an Interdepartmental essay writing competition and Poster Making Competition on 07.06.2016. Shilpa Saisidharan of Semester II and Rose Mary Noble of Semester IV secured second place and third place respectively. 25 students of various departments participated in the event, and the posters made by students were displayed in the college. 
  • Dr. Smitha Asok V. delivered an Invited Lecture in association with the World Environment Day Celebrations 2016 at Kerala University College of Teacher Education, Kariavattom on the topic, ‘Meeting Environmental Challenges – A Citizen’s Role’ on 14th June, 2016.

  • Ms Aswathy Asok and Smitha Asok V participated in the National Seminar on Photonics, Medicine and Environment (NSPME – 2016) and was awarded the Best Degree Project Presentation Award for the paper entitled “Assessment of changes in landscape pattern due to urbanization pressure in The Kinfra - Vizhinjam Stretch, Thiruvananthapuram City“ held on 22nd and 23rd June, 2016.

  • A Field trip to Marine Aquarium and proposed Harbour, Vizhinjam was organised on September 7, 2016, with both batches of Msc Environmental Sciences and concerned faculty of the department.

  • An Alumni meeting was organised inthe department on  July 16, 2016.  25 alumni members participated in the event and they spent the whole day in the campus with the faculty 

  • Dr.Reshma.J.K., as Co-Ordinator, and Dr. Ayona Jayadev as Joint Co-ordinator, co-ordinated FAMELAB South India Regional Finals organised by British Council in partnership with University of Kerala and KSCSTE on 30th November 2016 at Tagore Theatre, Vazhuthacaud 

  

  • Dr. Reshma .J.K was invited as resource person for handling classes for IAS foundation course(Water Management and Conservation ) for students at St. Francis Xavier church, Thirupuram on 08.10.2016 Both batches of MSc Environmental Sciences and faculty visited the exhibition organized by Medical College , Trivandrum entitled ‘MEDEX-2017 ‘ on 08.01.2017.

 

  • Dr. Smitha Asok V and Ms. Jenitha Jerome attended 5 day training on ‘Geostatistical Analysis of Environmental Data’ conducted by National Institute of Technology Karnataka, supported by Global Initiative of Academic Network (GIAN) of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, at NITK, Surathkal from 5th to 9th December, 2016

  • The students of IV Semester M Sc Environmental Sciences participated in the One day Training Workshop on ‘Satellite Geodesy and Positioning’ jointly organized by Department of Civil Engineering, College of Engineering, Trivandrum and Indian Society for Remote Sensing (ISRS), Trivandrum Chapter, on 8th February, 2017.
  • The College got registered in the network of Institutions participating in the Outreach programme conducted by Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Department of Space, Government of India. Dr. Smitha Asok V., was nominated as the Co-ordinator for conducting the Programme. 
  • 19th Outreach Programme of the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) is being conducted in the Department on a course entitled ‘Remote Sensing and GIS applications in Carbon Forestry’ from 16 February to 10th March, 2017.  All 13 students of IV Semester M Sc, are participating in the Online Course conducted via AVIEW software.
  • Dr. Reshma J K attended an International Conference on Frontiers in Genomics and Molecular Techniques from 1st march 2017 to 3rd march 2017, at Dept. of Zoology, University College, Thiruvananthapuram, sponsored by Govt. of Kerala. 
  • An Orientation Training Programme on ENVI Software was conducted for faculty and students, by the Department of Environmental Sciences in association with ESRI India, on 6th March, 2017.
  • An Industrial Field visit was conducted to Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, Tamil Nadu on 9th March, 2017.

  • Ms. Rajanikumari and Ms. Haritha M.C., of the department won first prize in the Interdisciplinary Post Graduate Research Conference in Social Sciences entitled “Partner to Excel” organized by  PG Department of Commerce, Govt.  College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram on 14Th March 2017 

  • Dr.Reshma.J.K., participated in the curriculum fair organized by IQAC, FLAIR and Curriculum Development Centre on 15.03.2017 at Senate Hall , University of Kerala. She presented the need for Portfolio Presentation – An innovative tool for Assessment, along with display of portfolio evidence managed in the department under Professional, Career and Skills Portfolio categories.

  • The skill portfolio and career portfolio prepared by students were handed over to the Portfolio library (Dr. Jessy Jose, Principal received the same for the Department) in a function organized in the Department. Also, a session was organized in the college to raise awareness regarding preparation of portfolio where the seniors of the department gave guidance and shared their experience in portfolio preparation with their juniors

  • Department of Environmental Sciences in association with Matprop Technical Services Pvt. Ltd. organised a One-day Training Programme on ‘Save Water Campaign 2017’ and also signed an MoU for undertaking Collaborative Research ventures in future on 22.03.2017.

  • Three teams from both batches of M Sc Environmental Sciences participated in the quiz competition organized in connection with World Water Day Celebrations -2017 organised by Vakkom Moulawi Foundation on 22.03.2017.
  • Sophiya Mole .L of  S IV MSc  received the best Outgoing Student from College  Hostel from Dr. Vijayanand, Chief Secretary on 23.03.2017
  • Arya Unnikrishnan and Veena. R.K., II sem Students participated in the Intercollegiate Quiz competition organized at University college as part of their sesquicentennial celebrations on 24.03.2017.
  • Both batches of MSc Environmental Sciences attended one day seminar related to World Water Day 2017  at Sasthra Bhavan organized by KSCSTE on  27.03.2017.
  • Department of Environmental Sciences in association with Matprop Technical Services Pvt. Ltd. organised a One-day Training Programme on ‘Field base Data collection and Report Preparation’ as part of the Collaborative Student Internship project on 10.04.2017.
  • Department of Environmental Sciences in association with Matprop Technical Services Pvt. Ltd. organised training on ‘Report Preparation’ as part of the Collaborative Student Internship project on 11.04.2017.
  • Dr. Smitha Asok V. successfully completed the three weeks Online Outreach Programme on ‘Microwave Remote Sensing and its Application’ conducted by Indian Institute of Remote Sensing from April 10, 2017 to April 27, 2017.
  • The final report prepared by students as part of the internship activities carried out for one month (1.04.2017 to 30.04.2017) was submitted to the authorities of MATPROP Technical Services pvt Ltd on 08.05.2017 by Dr. Beena Mendez, Principal of the college. A copy of the same was also submitted to the IQAC of the college. 
  • Dr. Smitha Asok V. and Dr. Ayona Jayadev attended  Two Day Training Programme on Effective Course Delivery Using MOODLE on  05.05.2017 and 06.05.2017 at ICT Academy of Kerala, Technopark, Trivandrum
  • Students of the department participated in the Beach Cleaning Campaign organized jointly by Kerala State Biodiversity Board and WWF on 22.05.2017 in connection with International Coastal Day Celebrations at Sanghumukham beach.
