Activities

  1. On June 10th, 2021 at 10:30 am, the inaugural function of the Young Communicators Club, All Saints’ College, Thiruvananthapuram Chapter was organized by the PG and Research Department of English in association with Public Relations Council of India – YCC. It was held under the supervision of Ms. Kukku Xavier, Program Facilitator and Dr. Sonya J Nair, Head of the Department of English of All Saints’ College, through Google Meet which was live-streamed through YouTube. The inauguration was open to the public and approximately 100 people were in attendance.              

    The inaugural address was given by T.P Sreenivasan, Former Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations. He talked about the major evolution of the study of English literature over the years, the relevance of image building in the modern world and how public relations role is important during this crisis period. He also mentioned the way in which public relations open up a career opportunity for literary students. 

    Mr. Ramendra Kumar, Former Head of Communication, Rourkela Steel Plant, writer and motivational speaker delivered the keynote address. He defined Public relations and told a story about converting a crisis into an opportunity, and spoke on how PR creates the relationship of transparency and trust. There was a question-answer session with the keynote speaker.  

    A short presentation made by the YCC members was presented. U.S. Kutty, National Secretary-General of PRCI, administered the oath.

     

    M.B. Jayaram, Chairman Emeritus & Chief Mentor of PRCI, Dr T. Vinay Kumar, National President of PRCI, Ram C Menon, Director of PRCI-YCC Kerala Chapter, Dr. Reshmi R. Prasad, Principal of All Saints’ College attended and addressed the meeting. The function lasted for two hours.

The Mathrubhumi  Campus Literary Quiz was held in association with the Sixth Sense Quiz Club and the Dept.of English. Mr. Biju Mohan was the Quiz Master .

Second Prize : S Neelanjana &  Gauthamy Murali of DC II English Literature.

Mathrubhumi  and the Conveners of the MBIFL  in association with the Dept. of English conducted a Campus Interview for Volunteers  for the MBIFL 2020. 43 students were selected for the same.

The Department of English organized a workshop titled ‘Creative Engagements in Poetry’. The first  session was handled by the renowned Tibetan Rebel Poet Tenzin Tsundue . He spoke about the nuances of Fine Writing and taught the participants the art of writing Poetry. 41 students attended  the workshop.  Faculty members , Ms. Sapna Srinivas and Ms. Celina James were the Co-ordinators of the same. 

The Workshop Titled ‘Creative Engagements in Fiction’ was  organized by the Department of English with  the first session being handled by the famous Ukranian novelist Andrey Yuryevich Kurkov. He spoke about the inticacies of writing and the author’s need to have essential lived experiences .Faculty members Dr. Kavitha N and Ms. Joveeta Justin were the Co-ordinators of the Workshop. There were 48 participants.

The second session of the Poetry Workshop had Dr. Lakshmipriya , notable poet and novelist as the Speaker.

The Second Session of the workshop on Fiction was handled by Mr. Sreekumar, famous Short Story Writer, Educationist and Critic. 

Arshia Ann Joy of Semester II B.A English Literature won the First Prize in The Essay Writing Competition held at Emmanuel College in honour of the Quadranscentennial Celebrations of Archbishop Sossai Pakiam .

 

Faculty members of the Dept.of English and the PG students attended the International Colloquium on Sexualities: Pasts, Presents and Futures organized by The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Kerala in Collaboration with the Dept of English, All Saints’ College.

Departmental Activities 2018-2019

An International Seminar was hosted by the Dept. of English from 10th December, 2018 to 12th December, 2018. The same was convened by the Principal, Dr. Caroline Beena Mendez and coordinated by the Head of the Dept. Ms. Sonya .J Nair. She also chaired one of the sessions in the Seminar. Ms. Kukku Xavier, Dr. Liji Varghese, Dr. Sr. Pascoela D’Souza, Dr. RajSree M.S , Ms. Diana V Prakash and Dr. Kavitha .N served as Chairs for the various sessions. The inaugural plenary session was presided over by Professor Emeritus Dr. William Earle and Professor Dr. Louis Bishop. They also inaugurated the Literary and Debating Clubs of the Department following the plenary session. 

Literary Club Activities

·            Club members participated in the National Integration Day Competitions and won prizes for Essay Writing. The winners are Surya Nandana of DC 3 Literature and Mariya Raj of DC 1 Literature who won the First prize and Keerthy Moses of DC  3 Literature who won the Second Prize .

·         Club members participated in the essay competitions organized by the Central Bank of India on 02-11-2018 in connection with ERADICATE CORRUPTION: BUILD A NEW INDIA programme. Winners are Bhadra R Nath (First Prize), Devi S (Second Prize), Sameera S (Third Prize) and Ancy V.S (Consolation Prize).

·         Members also attended the competitions organized by the State Bank of India in connection with the National Awareness Week from 31st October to 3 November 2018. Sameera S of DC III Literature won the First prize for Essay Writing Competition and Bhadhra R Nath won the Second Prize.

DEBATE CLUB ACTIVITIES :

·          Members of the Club also participated in the SPEAK FOR INDIA Competition organized by the Nehru Foundation on 27-11-2018. A.L Abhirami, Bhadhra R Nath, Devi .S and Gadha .U Thampi of DC 3 Literature were selected for the City Level Competition. Abhirami A.L and Bhadra R Nath qualified for the Zonal Competitions conducted in Quilon.

·         Club members won prizes for English and Malayalam recitation competitions conducted by B.N.V College, Thiruvallam as a part of the Cultural Fest “AALAP “on 28-09-2018. The winners are Oliviya Saju of D. C II English Literature and Devika M.G of D.C I History

COMPETITIONS:

·         Various competitions such as Essay Writing, Versification, Elocution, Recitation, Skit, Poster Making and Collage were conducted in February 2019 under the aegis of the Clubs as part of the Kriya Competitions.

·         Selected students attended the University Youth Festival.

·         Devi S and Bhadra R Nath of DCIII Literature secured the Third prize in English Debate Competition at the University Youth Festival.

  • The Literary and Debate Club functioning under the aegis of the English Association was inaugurated by Mr. B. Murali , the renowned Journalist in July 2016.

LITERARY AND DEBATE CLUB

The clubs function under the aegis of Smt. Celina James and Dr.Kavitha N of the Dept. Of  English. The clubs serve as platforms to pick out talented youngsters with a flair for literary activities like versification, recitation, story writing, debate and essay writing. The students are given encouragement to participate in the various competitions conducted by the college as well in the various intercollegiate competitions. They are also given instructions which may help them hone their talents in a better direction. For those interested in bettering their speech skills, the Debate club offers debates and free discussion panels to broaden their minds and sharpen their reasoning

THEATRE CLUB

The Theatre Club comprises of students from various streams who have a love for the stage. The club helps the students understand their potential and also provides them with an insight into the intricacies of acting, direction, script writing and so on. Students are given an opportunity to develop their personality and also acquire a greater degree of self-confidence. Essential qualities for the stage and in a broader sense, for life, such as discipline, determination, focus, team spirit, respect and so on are instilled in the students through the various activities organized by the club. The club is coordinated by the teachers of the Department of English.

THE SIXTH SENSE QUIZ CLUB

  • The Sixth Sense, the All Saints’ College Quiz Club, aims to help the students widen their realms of knowledge and sharpen their quizzing skills
  • The first meeting of the year was held on 30 June 2016. During the meeting, P. Namitha of DC II Economics was delegated the task of writing the minutes for the year. One of the plans for the year was to conduct an inter-departmental quiz competition. 
  • On 26 July 2016, the inter-departmental quiz on current affairs was held from 10.30 a.m. to 12.45 p.m. in room no. 23. Ms. Abeestha Nath J R, FDP Substitute Lecturer, Department of English, Government College for Women was the quiz master.13 teams participated in the competition. Six qualified to the finals. The winners of the competition are as follows:
    • I Prize : Arya Chandran, Anchitha M.J., Sneha Mary Rollin (Department of Mathematics)
    • II Prize :Anila Babu G., Samra Fuad, Niranjana V.H. (Department of English)&Aida Paul. Arunima S., Muneera S.( Department of Mathematics)
    • III Prize: Sreeja R., Saranya S.S., Reni Mathew, Nayanaji  (Department of History)

  • After the quiz competition, Ms. Abheeshta Nath gave the quizzers tips on how to prepare for a quiz competition
  • Sandra Satheesh and Darsana M.G. participated in the quiz competition jointly organised by the Information and Public Relations Department, the State Department of Education and the Gandhi Study Centre of Kerala University on 4 October 2016 as part of the Gandhi Jayanthi Week Celebrations. 
  • S. Devika and Sreelekshmi B.S. of DC II Communicative English participated in the quiz competition organised by the Department of Museums and Zoos, Thiruvananthapuram on 6 October 2016 in connection with the Wildlife Week Celebrations.
  • In connection with International Women's Day, the Sixth Sense, the quiz club of All Saints' College, organised an inter-collegiate quiz competition "Women Who Changed the World" to heighten awareness of women's contributions and achievements and the crucial role they have played in shaping our culture and history. The quiz was conducted by Mr. Ramvilas Ghosh A and Ms. Shamna Beegum, ASAP Skill Developpment Executives on March 8, 2017. The prizes and certificates were presented to the winners by Ms. Khyrunnisa A, author and former professor of All Saints' College. 16 teams participated in the competition.

  • Vijayalekshmi A.V. and Aaradhika Nair M.B. of Government Women's College, Vazthucaud secured the first prize. Sarath Sasimohan and Jayakrishnan V. M. of Mar Ivanios College, Nalanchira came second. Third prize went to S. Deva Narayan and Anaswar Krishnandev B. of M.G. College.
